Maybe it’s a good thing that it has been so long since Mêlée has released an album. The longer we waited, the more we anticipated a work of art and Mêlée delivered without disappointment. Devils and Angels is Mêlée’s debut full length album released via Warner Bros. Records. If this album doesn’t impress Warner Bros. executives then I don’t know what will.
Devils and Angels is packed with feel good piano-driven pop songs, that will force you to fall in love with Mêlée the second the 1’s and 0’s come in contact with the laser in your CD player. The opening track “Built To Last” sets the bar for the remainder of the CD, a bar that is hard to reach, but Mêlée makes it look easy with their ability to create songs that are feed off each other. “All of our friends/saw from the start/so why didn’t we believe it too/now look where we are/you’re in my heart now/there’s no escaping it for you.” “Built To Last”, although more mellow then the others songs on the record, eases you into the rest of the album. “Freq. Baby” is a powerful song with a little influence by Billy Joel. “Freq. Baby” is one of the stronger songs on the album that gets you up to dance. “This is supposed to be my hit song/but then I wasted it all you/tomorrow is near/and I am not going to waste it too” All of the songs has the noticeably exuberant, fun loving, piano feel to them that made us fall in love with them when they released Everyday Behavior on Sub Pop Records back in 2004. “Can’t Hold Down” one of the more emotion-driven songs sings “but if you can’t hold on/let it go and come back in your/and if you can’t hold/maybe it’s not time for you/and if you can’t hold on your very last try/I’ll be there in the morning to pull you through.” Mêlée ambitiously covered the Halls and Oats song “You Make My Dreams Come True”, and surprise, surprise they did magnificent job.
Mêlée has crafted an album that shows a promising future for the band. Every song on the album is the absolute best that it can be. Devils and Angels offers so much from the first song on the album to the last song. From humorous lyrics “I’m going to sue jet blue for everything they put me through” to beautiful ballad titled “She Gonna Fine Me Here” This album is highly contagious, so do not be surprised if this is the album that hoists Mêlée into the spotlight.
