Sara: For the record state your name and state what you do in The Audition?
Danny: This is Danny and I sing
Sara: What would you change about the current music scene?
Danny: I think that it’s a good prosperous music scene. More kids are coming out then ever before. I think people are really appreciating what we are doing and really being a part of something but with a different continuity now.
Sara: The West Coast for Winter Tour just started yesterday judging from that show what do you think the rest of the tour is going to be like?
Danny: Oh my God it’s going to be unbelievable; it’s going to be crazy. Everybody on this tour is insane, in a good way. We’re in Vegas right now and we have this massive massive suite that at the very end of the hallway. This is seriously like the biggest hotel I have ever seen in my life. The guys from Jack’s Mannequin last night were running down the halls and into the casinos just like screaming and running and Andrew from Jack’s Mannequin was running down the hallway like kicking doors, running into doors, and just like waking people up and shit at like 4 in the morning. It’s gonna be like unbelievable just like crazy.
Sara: Do you have any favorite CDs right now?
Danny: I’ve been listening to this dude named Robin Thicke he’s an R&B soul singer. I’m a big country fan. I like Tim McGraw the Rascal Flatts a lot. I love love love the new Bayside record. What else just came out…? I can’t even remember… the new John Mayer is unbelievable. I’ve been listening to a lot of John Mayer lately.
Sara: What are the good and bad things about being on tour?
Danny: Being on tour… I mean it’s hard, being away from your family and friends and your loved ones or whatever. We hardly get to see those people ever, I only see them if we’re lucky once a month. That is really the only thing I have to deal with every night. We get to see the world, we get to do what we love to do with our lives man, we get to play music for a living. Not many people say they love what they do in their lives. We can say that and we’re happy with that. We’re great friends. I never thought that I’d be doing this ever. I’ve lived 10 lifetimes in 2 years. So I’m happy.
Sara: There are always a few bands that are die-hard fans that are helping that band out in anyway possible. What’s it like to have these fans?
Danny: It’s crazy, it’s crazy man. To have people like follow your band around to like 6 different cities and drive hundreds of miles to see you. It’s a real great surreal experience especially when it’s for you band. When you do something, when you do a job you don’t give a shit about what you do, you’re think ‘I could quit right now and it doesn’t matter nobody fucking cares about me.’ But like its cool, in the music industry people care people want to be a part of something.
Sara: It’s been a while since your last CD after this tour do you have plans to go back into the studio?
Danny: Yes, actually we are going to write and record and new record in March, April and half of May. So hopefully it will be out late summer or early fall.
Sara: Do you have anything written right now?
Danny: We have 1 song actually that we’ve been playing live. You’ll see it but other than that we’ve been fooling around in the bus getting an idea of… we don’t really have anything written down we have a few things together. We had like 3 weeks off at Christmas and we really want to do anything not needed we just wanted to hang out with our families. Kinda like get the home life back again instead of being on the road.
Sara: Yeah, that’s understandable.
Danny: We didn’t practice or write anything so… other than that we haven’t been home at all this year. So we have idea but we haven’t been able to concrete those ideas.
Sara: Being from the Chicago scene there are a lot of bands coming out of there right now. Do you feel like they have influenced your music at all?
Danny: Uhm, I don’t really know. Not me personally, because I am not from Chicago so I didn’t grow up with that stuff so I don’t really know about it. I don’t know, I think that bands that play together all the time they feed off each other. I mean look at bands like Taking Back Sunday and Brand New. They are different bands but they have similar qualities I think it’s because they grew up together they played shows every week together, they listened to the same kind of music. I think that’s what influencing them more then ‘Oh my God that’s an amazing part or I’m going to take that part or like I’m going to do something like that”. I think it’s just being around each other so much, when you are around people so much you know you start copying off them and acting like them and you like become a tightly knit group of people and I think that is more so what it is in the Chicago scene then anything else.
Sara: How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard it before?
Danny: Pop rock. That’s all I can say is pop rock.
Sara: What is the best thing about being your band?
Danny: Uhm. I love the music we play. I love the song we wrote, like I love them. I love the dudes in my band I wouldn’t trade them for anything in the world. They are my best friends in the whole world. It’s so cool, when you spend so much time with people you think you’d get sick of them after a week but for what ever reason we never get sick of each other we are always laughing always having a good time. You see so many bands that hate each other. They don’t get along, they don’t like being in the presence of their other members. We are always like ‘Hey what’s up blah blah blah it’s good to see you again’. It’s really cool like how nicely, you know how well we get along with each other.
Sara: As an artist what do you feel is your obligation to your fans?
Danny: I don’t think we ever honestly had an obligation writing wise to our fans. I think even artists should write what you want to write not matter what. And it’s the true fans will accept it and they’ll respect it and they’ll listen to it. But I think being an artist I think you have to tour and I think you have an obligation to see those fans and play for them because they want to see you. The people that listen to you, they want to see you live. But writing wise, I don’t think anybody has any obligation to anyone.
Sara: What band or musician do you feel has made an unforgettable contribution to music?
Danny: Phew, I mean you could go down the list. You know?
Sara: Yeah.
Danny: Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Robert Plant, Mic Jagger, BB King, a lot of those really old artists. Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash. Those are the people that really put the prints down for rock and roll music. I think even a little bit of every one of those bands influence music today.
Sara: Sometimes being part of the music industry can be rough. What keeps you inspired to make music?
Danny: Oh, because it’s seriously what I want to do with my life. When I was in school I wasn’t happy. I didn’t know what I wanted to do. To all my friends I’d be like ‘Oh what are majoring in?’ They really didn’t know. They’d be like ‘Oh I’m going to be a teacher.’ And I was like ‘Do you really want to be a teacher?’ they’d be like ‘Not really but I have nothing else I can do I mine as well do this.’ And that just seemed like such bullshit to me, you know fuck that I don’t want to sit in a cubicle and work my ass of for little ass pay. I’d rather do something that I love. You know you live one life. Do what you love with that life, you just can’t abide by anybody else’s rules. You have to sometimes but like you gotta do what you want there is this thing called free will, you have to do what you want with your life or you won’t be happy and then what’s the point?
Sara: What is your main goal you’d like to accomplish with The Audition?
Danny: I’d like to make it a career. I’d like to be able to do the rest of my life. It’s a big part of my life. I’d like to share it with people, it’s really something I love to do and I hope that we can do that and be playing shows. It’s the only thing that I really want to do.
Sara: If you were granted three wish what would wish for and why?
Danny: [chuckles] I’d wish for Christina Aguilera’s sweet pipe. Uhm. I’d wish for… I don’t know that’s hard. I’d wish that I could eat really well on the road instead of eating shitty fast food all the time. And I wish that my loved ones at home wouldn’t miss me so much.
Sara: So I was talking to one of my best friends about this interview and I asked her what I should ask you and her first thing was to ask you ‘What are they auditioning for?
Danny: Uhm? What?
Sara: She told me to ask you what you are auditioning for…
Danny: Like uh…. auditioning for fans.
Sara: Okay!
Danny: For fans man. That’s what it’s about. You gotta win people over that believe in your music.
Sara: That’s it. Do you have any last things to say to the World Wide Web?
Danny: World Wide Web, you are a creep. You are a horrible thing, but I love you World Wide Web. It ruins lives, but I love it. No, uh, hopefully if you read this come out to a show and say hello and hang out with us. We’d love to meet you guys. Come chill with us.
