Sara: For the record state your name and what you do in Punchline
Chris: I’m Chris Fafalios and I play bass for Punchline.
Sara: What would you change about the current music scene?
Chris: I would have band focus a little bit more on music and a little bit less on the way they look. I don’t know I wouldn’t really change too much I think the bands that are actually could are the bands that last. I don’t know. I think music is awesome. I love music more than ever and you know I don’t even know if I necessarily listen to bands that are in our music scene. I just like music in general. I like everything I like country, I like techno, I like everything I like all kinds of music I think everyone should just listen to everything and not worry about scene and stuff like that.
Sara: A few months ago you released 37 Everywhere-
Chris: True.
Sara: How have your fans received it as opposed to your pervious releases?
Chris: Most people I talk to really like it. I mean most people like our band already and I hope that we made new fans with it. I feel like it’s stronger it’s a stronger album overall song writing wise and lyric wise then our last album. I mean I’m proud of both album I’m really happy we made both albums but I feel like this one is stronger song writing wise and lyrics wise and I don’t know so far we got a great reaction to it. I haven’t heard any complaints.
Sara: How is different then your other CDs
Chris: I would say it’s still Punchline but we worked with more pop oriented producers this time, I’m not saying, I think it’s even less poppy then our last CD and more melodic. It’s definitely our strongest songwriting wise. We really used to write a million parts for each song and it would just become this big mess of a song but with the producers we worked with they really brought us together. There are chorus you remember and stick in your head and things like that and I just feel like it’s our strongest album overall.
Sara: Do you try and do something different with each CD.
Chris: Oh yeah, of course.
Sara: Like what types of things?
Chris: We always try to write better songs. Make each album better and I don’t know. I mean as far as different things I don’t know I just feel like we always try to progress as a band.
Sara: How have Punchline changed since you first started?
Chris: Since we started, well when we started the band we were a 3 piece. Steve, PJ, and myself and you know we progress, we all gotten better at our instruments, and gotten better as songwriters together and learning how to play. We were a 3 piece for a while we had one line up change over the year from our old guitarist to Greg and overall we’ve just grown up together basically and I feel like our music has grown along with us.
Sara: So you are really close with your fans with the Youtube comments, Myspace replies-
Chris: Very, very important.
Sara: Yeah, why go through all that effort?
Chris: Because our band, first of all our band, we might not have the most fans and friends and stuff like that but we definitely have the best. People that like our band are so nice. Everyday I meet the nicest people. For example for tonight, like I felt like tonight, for the record I felt like tonight was one of our worst shows ever [Editors notes: The show honestly was really not that bad at all] but yet the people that standing in front of me made we feel so good. When I wanted to go hide under a rock tonight people came off and made me feel good about things and I really felt important. I feel like bands are insane if they don’t make an effort to answer all their myspace messages and to really get to know people that like them because that’s the people that our allowing them to do this and to make music. I think that if you lose that and if you don’t make an effort, I don’t feel like it’s a very appreciative way of living or doing what you love. We definitely appreciate more than anything at this point. That’s why.
Sara: You came back from Japan recently, you just toured in Japan with some label mates-
Chris: True.
Sara: How is that different then shows in the US? How are the fans different?
Chris: Oh the fans. Well Japanese, the people that like our music in Japan rule, they are amazing. Not that the US is different it’s just that people will go insane well you are playing and as soon you are done, not that people don’t listen here but as soon as you are done, and you start talking silence. They are paying attention to you so much. Maybe it’s because they are trying to understand what you are saying. People are so nice, everybody wants a picture. You meet so many nice people, you can tell that people really make an effort to learn how to say things so they can tell you that they like your bands or say something nice. Just the nicest people every band that goes over there is really impressed with how awesome the Japanese fans are.
Sara: What are your plans after this tour?
Chris: This has been a 10 week tour. We are going to take a couple weeks off, play a show here and there around home, we are going to write some songs cause that’s what bands do. What bands should do. Bands that don’t do that you wait like a years for songs it just doesn’t seem right. So we are going to write and record some songs just basically make ourselves happy and then we are going to hit the road and whatever the best possible tour we can do this fall, we are going to do. Whether it’s headlining, it might be headlining or if we can a good support tour we’ll do that.
Sara: Are you going to come back all the way to the west coast?
Chris: We always come here, every couple of months we come through here. We’ll be here.
Sara: Name one artist you feel has made an unforgettable contribution to music.
Chris: Oh man, this is so standard for me to say. I’m in love with and obsessed with Björk. 90 percent of what I listen to is Björk. I just really in the past year and a half 2 years just got obsessed. She like changed the way I look at life. I have such a high opinion of Björk I put her up there with The Beatles. Not that we sound anything like her, it’s just the most inspiring music. I feel like the one thing we do have in common is I read an article that she never writes anything in her music that isn’t inspiring to people. She wrote one song that she said was a bad song and she feels embarrassed. I feel like in a lot of our songs we want to do that. I just respect her I think she is so talented. My favorite voice ever and some of my favorite lyrics ever. English is her second language and she writes lyrics that are better than almost everybody. I don’t know that’s my answer to that.
Sara: So you were featured on Youtube-
Chris: True!
Sara: That is an amazing accomplishment I must say what was it like when you found out?
Chris: We were siked. Tony and I. Tony is my associate.
Sara: Tony is my hero.
Chris: Yeah, Tony is the man. When we saw that we were so happy. It was a four second video of the crowd saying “Youtube.” Hey, I just got a director’s account today. I just got approved for a director’s accountant today. Our goal is to get Texas Toast featured. Our goal is to get Episode 3 feature I think it can happen.
Sara: If not you can get Most Discussed or
Chris: Yeah, yeah, something.
Sara: If you could be anyone for a day who would you be?
Chris: That’s a hard question. That’s an interesting question. I think I’d say a standard answer and be like Brad Pitt for a day.
Sara: It’s just for a day.
Chris: Yeah you only get to do so much in a day. Yeah so I’d be Brad Pitt and just be real good looking and pick up some girls. Be rich, I’d do like the rich stuff.
Sara: Shopping.
Chris: Yeah, but a lot of stuff.
Sara: Okay do you have a really good joke? It can be corny because I love corny jokes.
Chris: Why did the monkey fall out of a tree?
Sara: Why?
Chris: Cause he’s dead.
Sara: So there is a story behind this question, but what do you think a 37 looks like?
Chris: What do I think it looks like?
Sara: Yeah.
[looking at my sister’s shirt]
Chris: Well if you switch the around three it’s a heart.
Sara: You have to connect- oh.
Chris: Yeah if you turn the three backwards.
Sara: So it’s like less than three.
Chris: Yeah, if you put, yeah, it’s a heart. It looks like a heart.
Sara: That’s a good answer.
Chris: Why what do you think it looks like boobs?
[everyone laughs]
Chris: It could.
Sara: Do you have anything to say to the Internet world?
Chris: Hi. I’m part of the Internet world. I spend hours and hours each day trying to make major contribution to the Internet world. If you are reading this, I have probably talked to you before at same point or messaged you in some way. So hi again.
