Sara: For the record state your name and what you do in Brave Citizens
Andrew: My name is Andrew Capra, I usually sing and play guitar.
Adam: My name is Adam Bialik, I often play the guitar, and keys, and sing backing vocals.
Sara: So how did Brave Citizens form?
Andrew: It started after, just this past summer when we started sending laptop demos back and forth across the state because we lived very far from each other and we decided just to meet in the summer for 2 weeks to record our able in San Francisco. We weren’t expecting to be a serious thing, just something sort of fun to work on together, but it ended up being a lot more than that. That’s pretty much it, we played out first show about 4 or 5 months ago and it’s been going from there.
Adam: We’re a baby band.
Sara: So with you living on different sides of the state how does that effect how the bands works?
Adam: We have to spend a lot of time just rehearsing on our own and making sure that, each individual person has to be at a perfect with the song before we can even meet. The most difficult thing is practicing because we have very very very limited rehearsal time, and it’s very hard being so far away from Andrew’s warm and loving arms.
Sara: Awwww. I sense the love.
Andrew: Yeah, we make it work.
Adam: It’s a long distance relationship.
Sara: You have recording plans coming up after Warped Tour and then what are your plans after that, touring? When should we hear new music?
Adam: Oh, when should we hear new music? That’s a scary question.
Andrew: Well, after this leg of Warped Tour we go back into the studio and we will be there just for about a week and then we head out again, and then we come back for a week. So our recording time is kinda scattered throughout July and what not, and should continue in August so definitely by early fall you’ll be hearing some great brand new tunes, that we are really proud of. We wanted to tour all summer but we also wanted to record a new record so we had to basically work it in, so we have no down time this summer. We are going to be touring straight through mid-August.
Sara: Okay, cool. So how has your short stint on Warped Tour been?
Adam: It’s been great, we’ve had a lot of fun, met a lot of really great people, made a lot of contacts. It’s a lot of work, long drives, we don’t have a… we are carrying ourselves so. We are taking shifts, getting sleep in, sleeping vertical is kinda difficult.
Andrew: Yeah.
Sara: So how have fans reacted to your new EP? That you are giving out for a donation of a dollar right?
Andrew: Yeah, people have been really excited about it, which is great. A lot of people picked it up prior to Warped Tour and we are meeting a lot of new people which is the whole point of it, so, the response has been great and people are always wanting new stuff so it’s kinda why we have been pushing to record in our tour gaps this summer, the fans really want something new.
Sara: So, what are Brave Citizens goals?
[silence]
Andrew: Brave Citizens cults?
Adam: [laughs] Goals!
Andrew: I heard cults and I was like, we have cults?
[everyone laughs]
Andrew: Brave Citizens’ goals to be on a bus next year for Warped Tour is one of them
Adam: We’d like to be able to do the whole tour, we are just doing a couple, we are just starting off the tour this year.
Andrew: We just want to have the means to tour continuously and see the world pretty much. We don’t mind working 24 hours a day, so I think that, actually we just want to be everywhere.
Sara: What would you change about the current music scene?
Adam: About the current scene in general?
Sara: Yeah.
Adam: I feel like, and I don’t know how to answer this question without seeming like a jerk, I feel kinda like there is a lot of stuff that is sort of regurgitated, a lot of music is kinda redundant and not that to say that any of it is any better or worse than anything but you are always searching, I’m always searching for something new, freshen my ears. I feel like, even though there is Myspace and Purevolume, which kinda helps it out, I feel like that gets a little bit more and more difficult each year.
Andrew: Yeah, I mean a lot of music feels like it is lowest common denominator. Everything these days is about selling units and if you don’t sound like this, you don’t sell units so you change your sounds like that, so you can. Just a lot of stuff like, that’s what disheartening. And those really stupid hip-hop shirts, these young bands are wearing on Warped Tour, with like the loud lettering and things like that, the neon shirts and stuff, my eyes hurt.
[everyone laughs]
Sara: Okay so if you were granted 3.. or a
Adam and Andrew: 3 SUPERPOWERS?!
Sara: No, just 1.
Andrew: No you said 3. You can’t take that back.
Sara: Okay, 3 superpowers.
Adam: That puts a lot of pressure on us, let’s go with 1.
Andrew: As a band or…
Sara: Individually.
Adam: I actually, prepped myself for this one, I thought of a really good one. I would like the ability to adhere anything to anything else. So I could stick Paris Hilton to Bear Grylls. Do you know who Bear Grylls is?
Sara: No…
Adam: You know who Paris Hilton is right?
Sara: Yeah.
Adam: He is like this mountain man and he goes out into the woods, he jumps into like freezing ice water and he eats fish straight out of the river.
Sara: So she’d be like stuck in The Simple Life?
Adam: No, she like physically stuck to this guy and they’d have to work together to break the curse.
Sara: Nice.
Andrew: My superpower would be to cut in front of the Warped Tour catering line.
Adam: Ohhhh
Andrew: That would be my superpower and I would kinda just glide, as if I was on a skateboard but not and I would just kinda go and they’d be like “oh my God, that’s Andrew, just let him go” and I’d go straight to the front. Every time.
Adam: Like mentally tap the shoulder of the dude in the front so he’d turn around and then you could just slide in.
Andrew: and be like “I’ve been here the whole time”
Sara: Now for the 3, if you were granted 3 wishes what would you wish for? You can’t make anyone fall in love with you…
Adam: Oh, so this is Aladdin rules. Aladdin rules apply
Sara: Can’t bring anyone back from the dead, and you can’t wish for more wishes.
Adam: Icksnay on more wishes. As a band
Sara: No you can do individually...
Adam: That’s 6 wishes…
Sara: Unless you guys wanna share.
Adam: If I like some of his I’ll keep those.
Andrew: Uh, free gas.
Adam: No, how about we have an alternate fuel source, how about our band runs on love. [everyone laughs]
Adam: On band love.
Sara: What if you guys start hating each other?
Andrew: Then the van shuts down.
Adam: We can’t though, we have to keep moving, so we are just forced to love each other unconditionally.
Sara: Okay.
Andrew: You said it better than I. I’d wish for…
Adam: Weather to be like this. Wherever we are in time, there is always a cool breeze and every location on Earth is by the beach.
Sara: Is that 3?
Andrew: I guess that 3, you used 2 in the last one. Can I trick you
Sara: [shakes head]
Andrew: No? Okay, alright.
Sara: So Adam, this question goes for you.
Adam: Alright.
Sara: So I hear this story about cursing out one of your band mates dad.
Adam: [laughs] Yeah? Where did you hear that story? That’s weird.
Sara: Through the grapevine.
Adam: So you wanna know what happened?
Sara: If you wanna let the kids know.
Adam: I used to have a proud high school career working at Sears, in the electronics department. At one point Andrew’s father was looking to get a new TV. I wanted to sell to him because it’s straight commission and we don’t make any money and I should him the television and what not, we were at the studio one day, because we were actually in a band in high school together, I was in the tracking room which is separate form the control room so we can’t see each other but we can hear each other through the headphones and talk back through the microphones and Andrew’s dad walks into the control room and says “we just bought a new TV” or something I hear that, but I think it’s Andrew so I start yelling, I just start cursing my head off into the microphone, screaming for probably about 30 seconds straight and all of sudden there is just dead silence, and I look over at my friend who is in the room with me and his eyes are wide open and his jaw is dropping and he goes “you just cursed out Andrew’s dad”
[everyone laughs]
Adam: Yeah, it was horrendously embarrassing.
Sara: I think it’s pretty funny. Do you have any closing statements?
Andrew: Oh my God, thanks for kicking it with us. New record out soon and tour dates all summer.
